OCR: GETTING TO THE TOP OF A RAIN FOREST When scientists first explored tropical rain forests, most of the animals and plants were too high up to see. The scientists could study only what they could reach and whatever fell to the ground. Today, scientists can reach the top layers of a rain forest in many different ways. Some climb with ropes or use elevators attached to cranes. Others are carried by a kind of hot air balloon to the top of the rain forest and lowered to the canopy in an inflated raft. Now, scientists can explore all the layers in the rain forests. See Also: Tropical Rain Forest Layers
